If there's one piece of jewelry almost every woman wears, it's hoop earrings. They go with jeans and with an evening dress, to work and to a wedding. But when you come to choose, you find that a hoop isn't just a hoop: there are small and large, thin and thick, round and oval, plain and sparkly. Here's how we help customers choose in the shop.

Size: small, medium or large

Size is the first decision, and it mostly depends on one question: when will you wear them?

  • Small hoop. Sits close to the ear. Suits every day, work, and anyone who likes a delicate look. If this is your first pair, start here.
  • Medium hoop. You see it, but it doesn't take over your face. The most flexible choice, from morning to evening.
  • Large hoop. A fashion statement. Looks great with your hair up and at events, but it's heavier, and it can catch on hair or a scarf.

A tip from the shop: if you have a hoop earring you love, measure its diameter with a ruler. It gives you a good point of comparison against the details on the product page.

Thickness and weight

A thick hoop looks more present, and you feel it more in your ear too. A thin one is delicate and light.

Many of our hoop earrings show an approximate gold weight on the product page, for example "approx. 1.2 g" or "approx. 3.4 g". That number helps you understand what you'll be holding. A heavier earring is usually more solid too. If you have a sensitive earlobe, or you plan to wear them for long hours, a light earring will be more comfortable.

Shape: round, oval, drop

  • Round. The classic. Suits almost any face shape.
  • Oval. A little elongated, and it lengthens the line of the face. Looks more modern.
  • Drop. Narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. Soft and feminine.
  • Geometric. A hoop with corners or straight lines. For anyone who likes something a little different.

You can see all these shapes side by side in the hoop earrings category.

Plain or diamond-cut

Here the difference is in the light.

  • Plain. The gold surface is polished and smooth. Clean, quiet and elegant, and it goes with any other piece.
  • Diamond-cut. Small facets are cut into the gold that catch the light and sparkle when you move. Lots of shine without stones.
  • Stone-set. A hoop with stones along it. We also have hoop earrings set with lab-grown diamonds, in lab-grown diamond earrings.

Why 14K gold for hoop earrings

A hoop earring goes through a lot: opening and closing every day, contact with hair, phone and pillow. 14K gold is hard enough to keep the round shape and the closure working over time. Higher-purity gold is softer and can bend. The full explanation is in 14K gold.

All the hoop earrings on our site are made of 14K gold.

Yellow or white

Yellow gold is the classic hoop look, warm and eye-catching. White gold is quieter and suits anyone who mostly wears silver tones. When a model comes in more than one tone, you can choose it on the product page.

How many pairs you need

Some women keep two pairs: a small, thin hoop for everyday, and a bigger or shinier hoop for evenings and events. That way there's always something that fits, without overthinking it in the morning. If you're buying just one pair, a plain medium hoop in yellow gold is the one that goes with the most.

Wearing them with other earrings

If you have more than one piercing, a small hoop in the second hole next to a stud in the first looks really pretty. Just make sure the sizes are different enough that they don't compete.

How to care for hoop earrings

  • Take them off before sleep, showering and sport. Our terms recommend this too, and for good reason: in your sleep the earring gets pressed and bent.
  • Store each pair separately so they don't get scratched.
  • Check now and then that the closure locks properly.
  • Clean gently with lukewarm water and mild soap, and dry with a soft cloth.

Hoop earrings as a gift

Hoop earrings are one of the safest gifts: no size needed, and almost every woman wears them. If you're buying a gift, a small or medium hoop in yellow gold is hard to get wrong. More ideas in A gift for her.

Frequently asked questions

What size hoop earrings is best for everyday?

A small or medium hoop. It's light, doesn't catch on your hair and looks good both at work and in the evening.

Do thin hoop earrings bend?

A very thin earring can bend if you sleep in it or it gets pulled. 14K gold is harder than higher-purity gold, so it keeps its shape better. Take them off before sleep.

What's the difference between a plain hoop and a diamond-cut hoop?

A plain hoop is polished and quiet. A diamond-cut hoop has small facets that catch the light and sparkle.

Can I shower with gold hoop earrings?

The gold itself won't be harmed by water, but soap and shampoo dull the shine. It's better to take them off.

Are hoop earrings a good gift?

Very. You don't need to know a size, and almost every woman wears them.

Yellow or white gold hoop earrings?

Yellow gold is the classic, warm hoop look. White gold suits anyone who mostly wears silver-toned jewelry. When a model comes in both tones, you choose on the product page.

Can hoop earrings be engraved?

Usually there's no room on a hoop earring for engraving. If you want to add something personal, a pendant or a ring suits that better.

Do heavy hoop earrings harm the earlobe?

A very heavy earring can pull on the earlobe after long hours. For everyday wear, a light hoop is better. Some of our product pages show an approximate weight that helps you choose.
