A lot of customers who come into our shop before a birthday or an anniversary say the same thing: "I want her to love it, not leave it in the box." That's the right goal. Good jewelry is jewelry she wears. Here's how to choose a piece like that, without being an expert.
Start with what she already wears
Before you open a catalog, watch her for a few days. What does she put on every morning? That's the best information you'll get.
- Gold color. Does she mostly wear yellow gold or silver tones? If she likes silver tones, she'll probably be happy with white gold. Both come in 14K gold.
- Size. Small, delicate pieces, or big ones you see from across the room? If she wears small earrings every day, a huge hoop probably won't be her pick.
- What's missing. If she has a necklace she never takes off, maybe she needs earrings to go with it. If she wears a watch, maybe a thin bracelet next to it.
Which piece to choose
Every type of jewelry has its advantages, and one matters most for a gift: whether you need to know a size.
A pendant or necklace
The safest choice for a gift. No size, they're seen right away, and they suit any age. A heart, a drop or a single small stone is a classic she won't tire of. Our pendant prices include a chain, so you get a piece that's ready to wear. You can see them all in women's gold pendants.
Earrings
No size here either, and they're worn every day too. If she wears small earrings, studs or a small hoop will suit her. If she likes to stand out, a big hoop or a drop earring. We have a full guide to gold hoop earrings, and all the earrings are in women's gold earrings.
A bracelet
A lovely gift, especially for someone who wears bracelets. Pay attention to the length. If she has a bracelet that fits her well, measure it. See women's gold bracelets.
A ring
The most personal choice, and the most complicated because of the size. If you're still going for a ring, read How to find your ring size first. Under our terms, the first resize of a ring bought from us is free.
A gift for the occasion
- Birthday. An everyday piece she'll wear a lot: a delicate pendant, earrings, a thin bracelet.
- Anniversary. Something with meaning: a pendant with a lab-grown diamond, a row ring, or your date engraved.
- A new baby. Many fathers buy their wife a piece of jewelry to mark the birth, for example a pendant with the figure of a boy or a girl. We also wrote about this in gold jewelry for babies and kids.
- Just because. That's the gift people remember most.
And what about a diamond?
A diamond is always a big gift. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond grown in a lab, and it gets you an impressive stone on a budget that wouldn't stretch to a natural one. If you're unsure, Lab-grown diamonds: what they are explains it all simply.
How much to spend
There's no right price for a gift. A small piece she wears every day is worth more than an expensive one sitting in a box. Decide on a budget before you start looking, then choose within it the thing that suits her best, not the biggest thing that fits the price.
A few points that help with the budget:
- A pendant with a lab-grown diamond gives a lot of sparkle for much less than a natural diamond of the same size.
- Gold earrings without stones are a good way to get a full, noticeable piece on a modest budget.
- One good piece is better than three average ones.
What to write on the card
You don't need a poem. One personal sentence is enough: why you chose this particular piece, or what it reminds you of. That card is often what she keeps together with the jewelry.
Engraving and wrapping
Two things turn a piece of jewelry into a gift:
- Engraving. A name, a date, or one word only she'll understand. It looks best on pendants and rings.
- Gift wrap. The piece arrives wrapped and ready to give.
Both are on us, free of charge.
